Woods Street Arts Space: Young artists ideas come to life
Category: Community Murals
I was approached by The City Of Hobsons Bay Council to facilitate a 4 week project with young people in the local area. Throughout this process I taught them the fundamentals of painting murals with techniques from scaling to the basics around paint. After we sat down and drew all of our ideas we came up with a concept around the key elements of The Woods Street Arts Space which is “The Arts” primarily: Theatre, Music, Visual Arts & Dance.
Myself and 4 young artists put this project together and during the painting stages we had a whole bunch of their friends visit to help us bring it to life!
From Sketches to Mural Concepts
A great part of this project was working with young creatives that already had a distinct drawing and painting style, this made the process really easy for creating a visually striking concept design. Here you will find some of those starting sketches that helped inform the final concept.
Final Outcome
This mural was to be painted in a really tricky spot through a very narrow hallway and down a spiral staircase, due this I came in a day early to sketch up our final concept putting colour swatches in areas to simplify the painting process but when the young artists came in I encouraged them to follow this general structure but if creativity struck to do whatever they’d like. This made for the perfect process of creative freedom/structure to both learn and play while ensuring a professional finish at The Woods Street Art Space for years to come.
