A Mural Focusing On Inclusivity
Category: Community Murals
When approaching this project there where two main point of focus one being telling the story of people of all different backgrounds and abilities and the other was making it simple enough to have a diverse community physically help bring it to life while maintaining a professional and effective finish. To begin this process I got images of people from their community of all different backgrounds from a older lady, a young girl in a wheelchair and others of different cultural and ability backgrounds. To shine a positive and inclusive light on these figures I decided to mix up the colours so to not divide the viewer to hopefully have each and everyone see themselves in a character on the wall no matter what.
This mural was painted along the waterline at Lord Somers home base with 50+ participants through a community engagement approach, a schedule of 45 minute brackets where created with a booked/loose drop in fashion. The incredible hands on experience gave an amazing level of connection and accomplishment to those who where a part of the process with each and everyones touch forming what became a legacy piece for the location. Once this community engagement aspect finished up I spent a few days cleaning everything up, adding line work and making it all pop. In the end we had a double levelled mural that tells a story in every way imaginable.
