A Fresh School Mural Melbournes Western Suburb of Kings Park

I take pride in two key aspects when it comes to school murals. First, I create a seamless process for the school, from initiating the design conversation to delivering a professional finish that brings vibrancy, hits the mark, and stands the test of time. The mural project at Copperfield College’s Kings Park Campus was no exception.

To start, I collaborated with a focus group of creative students to develop the plan together, giving them a sense of ownership in the artwork. The theme for this mural was “Anti-Vaping.” After extensive discussions, we realized the challenge of visualizing this without referencing or depicting vapes in the school. Putting on my creative thinking cap, I proposed creating a mural and surrounding space that promoted health, positivity, and life.

The mural was painted on one of the school’s major toilet blocks, which had issues with vaping in the past. The goal was to discourage this behavior and rejuvenate the space with a healthy and lively atmosphere. To complement the mural, I sanded back the surrounding seating and painted it bright blue, matching the mural’s background. This transformation turned a dull, mucky courtyard into a colorful meeting area for students and teachers to enjoy.

Step By Step Process:

Step 1: Brainstorm ideas with students through an engaging workshop of drawing, conversation & writing

Step 2: Take those ideas back to the studio to create a moodboard with

Step 3: Put together general sketches to give the school options for the look of the mural

Step 4: Finalise mural design and begin preparing paint and materials needed
